Gmail addresses are now banned from registering with MMR

In an effort to curb the massive amount of spam I have been getting hit with lately, I am forced to ban GMAIL addresses from registering. Please use a different email address if you are going to register here. If any current members have hiccups becuase of this, let me know via the Contact MMR Link in the top left of the forum, and we will get your email changed.

Just FYI, but I would have never signed up if gmail had have been blocked.

For those of us that originally signed up with Gmail, is this going to present a problem?

No it should not cuase a problem. However I would suggest changing the email if possible.

@big daddy - I let it go for a very long time before I had to do this. The spam bots have been hitting me super super hard lately, cuasing me to have to even take time out of my workday to clean up the board. Every spambot originates from gmail. They have recently gotten pretty advanced and are now beating the recaptcha protections on a regular basis, rather than here and there as it was a few months ago. I just got tired of every time I checked the forum there being 15 new threads and 40 new posts from 5 or 8 spambots, that i had to clean up.


For now, the Gmail ban stands. In the meantime, I will search for an alternate solution.

I completely understand your battle with the spam bots. I help moderate a board with over 33,000 members and 700,000 posts. To make matters worse, the site is for an automation/scripting software. One of the developers on the site wrote a block script in python the parses and blocks known proxy ip ranges. This has made a significant dent in the amount of spam.

Unfortunately the IP ranges that the spambots come from all over the world, and I hesitate to ban all of the IP ranges becuase that could keep legitimate users from even viewing the site.

As I said, I will investigate a new fix, I didnt want to ban GMAIL but only a few of our registered users use gmail, and 99% of the spambots base out of it. So for now, call it a temporary fix, that lets me use my little amount of free time in searching for a real fix, instead of cleaning up the spam mess.
