Default WTF master link?

I'm just tring to put a simple master link on and I cant seem to squeeze it tight enough to see the grove to slide the clip on. Is there a seceret to these things, or am I just as dumb as I feel?

Even with a clip on Master link I would recomend a chain tool to squeze on the chain plate enough to see the groove. Check out Harbor Freight: Heavy Duty Chain Breaker
the tool bent the second time I used it, but I was putting on a rivet link.

Remember to take your time and press each side slowly and evenly until it is tight enough. Over tightening could cause a pinched link not allowing proper movement.

I have a chain breaker, never thought to use it to squeeze the link. I'll give it a shot right now.

For those that dont have a chain breaker, use large vice grips and a nut to allow the post of the link to slide thru. Start with the grips kind of loose and "walk" it in working on each post alternately.

Thanks earz, I thought that I was doing it the "Primitive Pete" way.

Yeah! I take chains apart with a hand or die grinder and put them together with a vise grips or pliers.

Didn't mean to bust your balls. I have had a couple of master links deal me fits and I struggled to assemble them too.
