Haha I wasn't worried about it. I'm still in awe (spelling?) that someone hasn't freaked out that I'm putting a clip style master link on.

as long as clips are installed *correctly* there is no problem - is it going in the right "direction"?

To my knowledge it is. With the chain on the rear sprocket, I slid the clip downwards. I dont know how else to explain the direction I installed it in.

you want it going against the direction of the chain rotation

in other words - with the clip on top, the opening points backwards. if something were to touch the clip, it can't slide the clip off

I've got a ton of miles on both types and have only had one come off at triple digits once... just once... but it wasn't my fault!

Yeah, that's the direction I got her going. I'm going to put the rivet style in when I get my tool just to try it out.

Never had a clip come apart and they make chain maintenance some much easier, but I have never had a rivet setting tool for chains. I didn't know you could get one.

the one I had come off had been on for 18k (yes, 18,000 on my chain - not a typo)

the bike, 98 Speedtriple, had a problem that required dropping the motor and the dealership removed/replaced the chain as part of the process

about 100 miles after picking up the bike from the repairs, I blitzed pass a lady and her kids through a left hand sweeper. loud pipe and triple digits.

I had no more than pulled back into my lane when it felt like I missed a gear and hit false neutral and at that same instant, something flashed past my head. I thought it was a bird

when it *wouldn't go back in gear* I coasted to a stop to see it was missing the chain.

the lady I had just strafed was kind enough to pick up the chain from the middle of the road and bring it to me.

the guy at the dealership didn't put it back together correctly and not know they monkeyed with it, I didn't double check it

other than that _ I've worn out a dozen with clips and have had no problems

I did something like that while I was in college. I was hard on the gas as I left campus shifted from 2nd to 3rd. I thought that like ammo, I had hit neutral. I threw the chain into the case and damaged the case. Luckily a tube of J-B Weld and a hand sander and I had it up and running.
