Holy crap - you weren't kidding about the grime!! Time to switch brands of chain lube my friend.

As far as I can tell (through the gunk) the sprockets look to be in good shape. Here's an illustration that will help. Pay attention to the flat tip of the tooth. It should also have a slight roundness at the tip. The smaller and pointier the tip, the more worn the sprockets are. If the wear enough, the teeth actually start to curve a bit.

Ya. That's a big mess ahead of me.

Luckily I'm off the rest of the week with 2gallons of kerosene and a wire brush.

Should I put the kerosene into a spray bottle and let it run off to clean that area without removing the chain/sprocket(s)?

Its up to you. Like I said, removing the chain will require some work and special tools. Personally, I'd just use a brush (preferably a nylon bristled - not a wire brush) and just dip the brush in the kerosene and scrub the chain while it's still on the bike. There is enough room to get the sprockets clean as well doing it this way.

Come on man! Everybody knows the best way to clean a chain is to hose it down with kerosene, fire the bike up, but it in gear, and hold a rag to the chain while your buddy revs it up.

Well, that's what I do, but I'm also missing a few fingers...

You only need one to hitchhike and the other to pick your nose
