ok so i downshifted and gunned it and once i finished i noticed right away that i had a big loss in power and the exhaust sounded a little bit different..
the engine isnt making any noises and it idles the same. anyone have any clue what could be wrong?? did the timing chain slip any teeth maybe??

Could be a myriad of things. If there were no strange clunks/thuds/snaps/booms/bangs when you downshifted/WOT, and since it's a carby engine, my first guess would be float height set to high (height is measured with carbs upside down) resulting in insufficient fuel in the bowls. Your WOT run basically drained the bowl and there was not enough fuel to keep up with the demand of the engine.
Another possibility kinda goes along with that, in that the bowls were sucked almost dry, and any sediment that may have been hanging out in the "deep end" may have been sucked up into the main jet and is partially clogging the fuel flow. Or dirt may just be coming out of the tank - drain a bit of fuel into a clear container and check for dirt, rust, and water. If all that checks out, it could be ignition coil got hot = too much resistance = weak spark. How long had you been riding prior to loss of power? Did power return? Once bike cools off, is power back? Clutch isn't slipping is it?

there were no noises before, during, or after.
no it didnt fix itself.. i just fired it up this morning and its still fucked. the carbs were cleaned 1500 miles ago. nope not clutch, exhaust sounds different and i think it smells rich now. you dont think it could be the timing chain slipped? damn honda chain tensioners suck but i converted my oem piece into a manual tensioner when i first got the bike and i last checked the tenison a couple hundred miles ago.

please post back with what you figure out.
I had a similar sounding problem on my T3 Speedtriple once, mine ended up being a bad exhaust valve. |

Definitely be worth checking cam timing. While youre in there, check valve clearances too.
If it smells rich, I've seen main jets fall out before.

i guess the next thing to do would be take the carbs apart?
