Default I couldn't leave it alone.

I decided to modify the muffler on my Ulysses. I have done some research on the Buell forum and have talked to some of the individuals personally. I have road for a while with the butterfly valve in the muffler constantly open. The sound that I was looking for was there and I had no motor issues. So last week I took my air cut-off tool to the muffler opened up the top of it and eliminated that part of the exhaust system. Before I painted it I hooked it up and everything is good so far and it now sounds like a v-twin.

Here are some before and after shoots.

Yeah, it's pretty ugly, but it mounts under the bike so it's not as noticeable as most bikes. I'm sure there are aftermarket options , but why pay for something you can modify yourself? LOL.

Drive belt? They should last wayyyyyy longer than a chain/sprockets - unless they get damaged by rocks, rubbing, etc. Typical belt life should be 10-25k miles.

Alan - nice work my friend. Get some video up for those who never ride and will probably not hear it in person *points to self*

I would have loved to have done a video comparison, but as some of you know I am technology challenged when it comes to that.

Belt life on a Buell is exceptional. My previous Lightning had almost 15k miles on the original belt. I also have about 1.5 miles of gravel road before I get to pavement, which is supposedly going to shorten the life of the belt.

This modification saved me at least $300. I hope that it works as good as it sounds.

Here is a flow chart of the stock muffler, its not real simple.

I wish this weather would straighten out so I could give it a good test ride.

My wish has come true weather has cleared up enough to dry out the county roads and not have to give the bike a bath when i was done. I took the Ulysses for a little shake down run. It sounds great and performs just like it did with the stock muffler. The volume of the exhaust at highway speeds will nor require me to wear earplugs.

Downside of the upgrade: The local dogs all want to come out and great me as I ride by, and I don't think that I can sneak back into the house late at night without the wife hearing me pull up.
