Default Transmission Teardown

I don't know if I told any of you that I happen to ride with towards the end of the season last year but I lost 3rd towards the end of riding last year.

Through a lot of research and some help from the R6-forum guys I decided to tear everything down myself to save a quick 2k in labor. I know you like build threads so I thought I would post up some pics of everything and of what I found.

After we got it all torn down we found that I shredded a tooth off my 3rd pinion gear. Was actually real easy to tear down with a service manual. Should be going all back together as soon as I get my new gear I ordered.

Spending the down time cleaning every inch of the frame and everything else, and adding a couple other goodies while its easier to get to everything.

Sweet man. Damn Yamaha's are terrible about tranny problems. It's good to get that "hands on" experience and save some cash.

Dang, I don't have the stones to do a tear down like that. Good luck with it.

What other goodies are you adding?

The 1st gen Yamaha's were bad about transmission problems but really none of the 3rd gen R6's have had issues. I was just one of the lucky ones with a faulty part.

Alan it wasn't bad, if you have ever torn into a car engine, a bike engine is really not that much different. I'm just adding some minor stuff, throwing on a thinner head gasket so get just a little higher compression. A set of low profile velocity stakes, smog block off plates and removal of AIS system for more accurate AF ratio when tuning. Maybe put in a set of stiffer clutch springs since factory it is very soft. Thats about it internally.

All yamahas have funky transmissions. I've got an '85 XJ700 and recently sold an '82 XJ650 that both had less than desireable tranny/shifter feel. Wondering how my XS650 tranny will be once I get it going?

Oh, and my dads old '86 quad was a little quirky too.

be prepared for your bike to be harder to start sometimes. The thinner head gasket makes it harder for the batt. to crank over.
