Default Stock Damper Mod ... Check it out!!!!

So as you all know I have the bike all apart because I am having some fork work done so I figured it would be a good time to try a mod that I have been thinking about doing for a while. A lot of people have done it on gixxer.com and say that they really love the difference that it made. This mod is a basic drain flush and refill of the stock steering damper on my 05 GSXR 600. I used 20w fork oil from Tergins to give the damper a bit more stiffness and a better feel. It is also better because the damper comes from the factory with air still in it and the way I refilled this one makes sure that there is no air left trapped. This should make it smoother than it was. It is a very easy and CHEAP mod that I believe anyone can do. The damper is held on at two points. It is held to the lower triple tree mount with a stud and a lock nut and is held to the frame with an allen screw.

Remove the Damper and remove the 2.5mm allen screw to drain the fluid into a pan. Work the damper through its stroke several times to make sure that you get all of the old fluid out.
(FYI: the dirt in the pan was already there and didn't come out of my damper.) LOL

Next you will have to find a container (I used a two liter soda bottle) and cut the top portion off of it to allow the damper to be placed into it. It needs to be big enough to allow you to completely go through the full stroke of the damper.

Fill the container with 20w fork oil and completely submerge the damper in the oil. Work the damper through its full stroke slowly several times until all the air is out it. Once you think it is completely free of air reinstall the screw to contain the fluid inside the damper.

Clean the damper and reinstall it onto the bike. Make sure to torque the mounting bolts to the specified torque for your bike.

Once you are done with the mod you (if you have used a soda bottle) you can tilt the bottle and remove the soda cap and pore the fork oil back into the original container to be used for other things if you so please. I figure I could find some little odds and ends to use it for lol.

I haven’t got to ride with it done yet because my forks aren’t finished yet but I am really looking forward to seeing what kind of a difference it will make. I will defiantly post up once I have gotten some miles in with it.

Please post up if you have any questions or comments on this!!

P.S. I had to save all the pictures as attachments to get them to show up because i am not smart enough to figure out how to put them in text lol.

Nice mod man! I'd be game to try it, but mine is electronically controlled. Nice step by step instructions too. Let us know what you think when you get it back on the street.

Well i got the bike back together today and went out on a ride to test the new damper mod i did. I was very pleased with the results. It is a lot more stable in the straights and it makes countersteering into turns a heck of a lot easier and quicker because of the added resistence. Just thought i would tell you guys how it worked out.
