Default Dual Sport Helmets

Last spring I bought a dual sport bike, and am in need of a bike specific helmet with a visor instead of my sport bike helmet. I have seen the new DS helmets that have a face shield with a visor, that allow you to use goggles as well. They seem an obvious choice over open face helmets that can only use goggles.

My question is why would you want to use goggles vs. using a face shield now that helmets allow face shields to open while using a visor?

Why do you NEED a visor helmet? I dont see why you would not use a regular helmet

I like those type of new helmets. I've thought about getting one just to have a different choice of lid to ride with.

just so you know, they are noisy and that visor is a wind grabbing SOB at speed - sustained speed will put a crick in your neck for sure.

I got a visor helmet. I wish I had gotten a different helmet, without a visor, and just used a tinted shield.

I found an add on visor and tried it for a while. I liked it when riding around sunrise and sunset. I too am thinking of buying a DS type helmet this spring.

Some of the visored/face shielded helmets look kinda cool - but I wouldn't wear one if I planned on traveling over 50 MPH. I've got a motocross helmet and some goggles that you're welcome to go try on a quick blast down the highway. Your neck will be worm out after a few minutes, much less a full day of riding.

My 2¢ is to rock the helmet you got and donate that money burning a hole in your pocket to your favorite charitable cause.

Again this is just for my DS bike which absolute max speed is 81mph. I am usually doing only about 45-50, so I don't think the visor will be a problem at that speed. THe visor does shield the sun better when sitting in such an upright position.

But back to my question from some of you Motocrossers, why are goggles superior to face shields? THey come with tear offs now, so what is the advantage?

What i do for sunny times is use a Tinted/mirrored visor on my icon helmet. My 'helmet is so tight to my face i can't put sunglasses under it, so i just bought 2-3 shields (gold mirrored, smoke mirrored, and Dark tint. Everyone one of them has a better riding time) And i haven't found many problems with light, etc. I know my kawi kx250 with my motocross helmet REALLY tugs my head back after 40mph...hurts after about 10 minutes of it.

typically, an offroad helmet is much better vented - maybe its has to do with the dust getting in and messing with your vision - goggles being sealed to your face

or maybe its to change out quicker, maybe its just tradition in that MX'rs wear goggles because they always have
